Reigning Sound

Watching Greg Cartwright noodle during soundcheck the other day was eerie. Without concentrating on what he's doing, he plays and there it is - that sound from all those songs I've heard so many times. He's been behind a few of my very favourite records and all the while I've never realized how good he is at guitar. His playing isn't flashy but the way he weaves rhythm and tricky lead lines together is unaffected, always serving the song. Glad I got to see them play finally.

They must have played about 30 songs in all and by the time the audience forced them back out for an encore they'd already done their best ones. Also, they sold out of all their men's t-shirts. They had nary a one left, not even a XXXL.

Live Review

This appeared in Now about a month ago, never got around to posting it. In this particular review Matthew plays the role of Frankie Lymon, much to the detriment of all in attendance....

Look what I found you guys:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BY4XIPOI

Full leak of Phrazes For The Young.

AND IT'S FUCKING AWESOME. HOLY SHIT.

I'm pretty sure this is what the future sounds like. Julian must have a time machine. He knows more than the rest of us now.

That was very difficult to find. I found it in spanish internet land.

If one more band "evokes summertime" I'm going to have a conniption. One simply needs to employ ample spring reverb, poorly conceived and executed harmonies atop (or rather astride) mediocre melodies in order to summon the spirit of Apollo, God of the Sun and hazy polaroids.

The sidewalks teem with pedestrian Beach Boys-cum-Joy Division abasements, each in turn sucking life out through the ears leaving behind an empty husk. Enough already.

New song lyrics:

What good is our love
if it don't go too fast
gotta run from what's to come
and hide out in the past

i'm gonna sell my soul
put it into a memory
give me a feeling when i'm older
of who i used to be

chorus
the lines we draw between the places
we discover who we are
i'm like you and you're like me
that's how i know you'll break my heart

the lines we draw are the lines we cross
becoming who we are
i can't be yours and you can't be mine
that's how i know i'll break your heart

all the things we been told
i don't know what for
in love and life all you do
is run on empty out each door

but when i don't have you
when i don't even have me
the love that beats my heart
will beat me back to who i used to be

chorus

You can call me....

We've decided to change our name. I know it seems a big deal, but it really isn't. There's no need for you to get too upset, though I certainly understand that you may be feeling confused, betrayed even. We will continue to be ourselves, no more and no less.

Modern Superstitions is the name from here on out, cause we're Modern guys, of course we've had it in the ear before. Why even ask?

Many new songs are being written and there is a general feeling of excitement. There are the vaguest of plans to record our newer songs properly in the near future, plans that are the stuff of dreams for the moment.

Talk soon,

The Fox

I was reading some poetry (because that's how I do) and I came across the following poem that made me want to punch something I liked it so much. Said poem lies below for your enjoyment:

The Fox

By Kenneth Patchen

Because the snow is deep
Without spot that white falling through white air

Because she limps a little - bleeds
Where they shot her

Because hunters have guns
And dogs have hangmen's legs

Because I'd like to take her in my arms
And tend her wound

Because she can't afford to die
Killing the young in her belly

I don't know what to say of a soldier's dying
Because there are no proportions in death.

So yeah. All pretensions of leisurely poetry-reading aside, that is damn good poem.

sunday morning brings the dawn in etc.

Looking at the Alexander Wang website makes me upset I don't have thousands of dollars worth of monies in my considerably less-fashionable-than-his jodhpurs. Those are some nice clothes-items I would very much like to hang in my teensy closet.

Also, some other words, which shall hopefully find me less shallow and in less dire pecuniary straits:

A short stanza in the style of Miss Dorothy Parker that is far too ridiculous to possibly evolve into lyrics,

From Love's first fever
Right up to its plague
It seems the Reaper's
Latched onto my legs

There. There's sufficient ridiculousness for a Sunday morning.

P.S. Inglourious Basterds was pretty much the best movie ever. It made me sweat.

From this moment forward

For you, we are a band of bloggers (who actually update things, probably). We will share with you our hopes, our dreams, our demos. Together we will laugh and cry, we will love and hate. We will live and die. We will experience all that the world has to offer.
We are marching toward a shining, golden future. Please, join us.

Neglect, live video

What a terrible job we've done keeping this up to date. I will be back more often with some demos, or interesting (?) news or SOMETHING.

Most of the next record is written and arranged, we'll keep our heads down and write until somebody tells us its time to record it all. It can be difficult to find a link between songs written up to a year ago and something brand new. I fear that it wont hang together, but the best we can do is to keep working away.

Eddy has asked us to play for the 25th anniversary of the Gem, on Wednesday July 29th. We'll have to go a ways back into the murky depths for enough material. We should just learn 'A Quick One...' and be done with it.

Here's a live video from the Whippersnapper Gallery (shot by Ben).
